Sustainable Agriculture Livelihood Project
Sustainable Agriculture Livelihoods project is a three-year program that started in 2019 that runs up to 2022 and is aimed at enhancing the capacities and resilience of marginalized communities in rural, post-conflict settlements in Nakuru, Kenya. The program is funded by Misean Cara and implemented in Kuresoi North (Kamara ward) and Njoro (Lare ward) constituencies. The program targets benefiting 658 marginalized households in four sub-locations; Sarambei, Mau summit, Kilo, and Milimani.
In the year 2022, the following activities have been achieved.
- Drilling of a borehole in Milimani Sublocation Lare ward
Pre-drilling works involving the Hydrological survey and EIA were conducted. Borehole drilling, casing, and test pumping were successfully carried out. The borehole was drilled to a depth of 273 m and yields 5m3/hr with a recharge rate of 65%.
Water quality testing was carried out and informed that the borehole water was fit for human consumption after treatment. The levels of Iron, fluoride, and nitrite were slightly above the recommended standards.
- Recruitment and capacity building of beneficiary households
200 Households were recruited to the project through a community participatory approach. 130 HHs in Kamara and 70 HHs in Lare wards respectively. The beneficiary households have also been profiled to establish baselines that will enable the quantification of project impact.
200 households are undergoing training on agronomic practices (land preparation, planting, pest and disease control, harvesting, and storage practices). 200 HHs undergoing training on water, sanitation, and environmental conservation.
